Korea win first point against New Zealand
Pool B – NZL 2-2 KOR

New Zealand and Korea have met twice at last year's Champions Trophy with Korea beating the Black Sticks 5-3 in Group C only to lose 2-3 in the bronze medal match, handing New Zealand their first ever Champions Trophy medal. Their last meeting came at the Four Nations Tournament in Cordoba where Korea beat New Zealand 6-4 coming back from being 0-2 down.

In today’s encounter it took New Zealand only nine minutes to take the lead thanks to Cathryn Finlayson (9’). Afterwards they could have extended their lead but failed to score from three successive penalty corners. However Katie Glynn doubled the lead in the 25th minute giving New Zealand a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Korea was the team who took control of the match in the second half while New Zealand struggled to maintain any position. Despite dominating it took Korea up to the 44th minute until Kim Okju scored the 1-2 by converting their 4th penalty corner.

New Zealand had difficulty clearing the ball out of their half and Korea maintained attacking pressure. It was only the good the keeping by New Zealand’s goalkeeper Bianca Russell which kept Korea from adding to their total. Finally with a change of variation at a penalty corner Kim Jong-Eun scored her 4th Champions Trophy career goal. All of these goals came in matches against New Zealand. Korea converted the last penalty corner of the game but their game-winning goal was referred by the video umpire because the umpire felt the ball did not leave the circle. This was confirmed by the video umpire and the game score stood at a 2-2 draw.
