POL V IND ( Pool A ) Hero Olympic Qualifier Delhi 2012
Match Review POL - IND 0-3
The match between host India (on a roll after their win 4-1 against Canada) and Poland (still chasing their first point of the competition) started in a warm ambiance in Delhi. The local crowd loudly encouraged every move of their team, but the Indian women committed unforced errors at the beginning of the match and the first serious chance was for Magdalena ZAGAJSKA of Poland, diving to deflect a ball that went just inches wide of the Indian goal.
This was the wake-up call the Indians needed and Ritu RANI scored on the next attack, left with an easy tap-in after a wonderful counter-attack that ended with two Indian forwards alone in front of Dominika NOWICKA in the Polish goal. The fast Indian players were often outrunning their opponents, but Poland maintained their structure and, despite some narrow escapes, reached half-time with only a one-goal deficit (0-1).
The Indians managed to fine tune their finish at the beginning of second period, and scored early to build a more comfortable 2-goal cushion. Poland was however far from defeated and were dangerous on a series of penalty-corner, but could capitalize on the opportunities. Yogita BALI was having a good evening in the Indian goal and deflected some hot situations in front of her.
India scored their third goal late in the game by Poonam RANI and survived a last second penalty-corne, for a final score of 3-0. They finished the day at the top of the standings with the same number of points as South Africa (both teams having two wins and a draw).
Player of the Match was Deepika THAKUR of India.
