Americans in hunt for gold at shutting out Scotland, 3-0
The victory was the next step in the unlikely surge of the U.S. at the tournament. After finishing in last place in their preliminary round group, the Americans beat the top team from the preliminary round, Ireland, in the Quarter Finals and followed up with today’s Semi-Final win against second-ranked Scotland.
The Americans controlled must of the first-half action, but went away at the break empty handed with the game tied at zero. The stalemate ended when Paige Selenski tapped in a pass through the crease for the 1-0 lead. In the last 10 minutes of regulation, the U.S. put the game away when Caroline Nichols easily beat Abi Walker on a penalty stroke to take the 2-0 lead.
The Americans sealed the win with jut over two minutes remaining when Melissa Gonzalez put in the 3-0 goal for the win.
Despite today’s loss, Scotland can still hold its head high. The Scots entered the tournament with the lowest World Ranking at 21 and will now play for bronze against 10th-ranked Spain.
Tomorrow all eight teams will be in action. India and Azerbaijan will face-off for seventh place at 9:00 a.m. That game will be followed by the fifth-place game between South Africa and host Ireland at 11:30. The bronze medal game between Spain and Scotland will begin at 14:00 and the day will end with the golden game between USA and Japan at 16:30.
