Pietie Coetzee breaks scoring world record

June 21, 2011
South Africa’s Pietie Coetzee broke the goal-scoring hockey world record today in South Africa’s 5-5 tie against the U.S.

Coetzee erupted with three goals in the first half against the Americans. Her third, coming mid-half, was the record setting goal. Coetzee’s teammates gave a hearty celebration of the goal and feted Coetzee as she ran down the field with her arms raised.

Coetzee entered the tournament with 216 goals in 218 international matches, five goals shy of the previous world record set by Russia’s Natalya Krasnikova.

Coetzee now has 222 goals, including scoring her fourth goal of the game, which came with three minutes left in action and saved the tie and a first-place finish in Group A for South Africa.

After the match, Coetzee’s teammates all put on white T-shirt that said “I played with Pietee when she broke the world record.” And Coetzee? She had on a black T-shirt that simply said “I am Pietee and I broke the world record…221 and counting”.
