Irish umpire calls 100th international senior game
Before today’s South Africa – India game, Irish Umpire Carol Metchette was presented with the official FIH Golden Whistle, given to individuals that have umpired 100 senior international matches.

Metchette was presented with the whistle by FIH Executive Board Member Anne Ellis and Irish Hockey Federation president Herbie Sharman and FIH Tournament Director Maureen Craig Rousseau at center field in front of a an enthusiastic home crowd.

Metchette became the 29th female umpire to receive a golden whistle and only the second Irish umpire to receive the honour after Mary Power earned the award in 2002. Mechette’s career highlights include umpiring the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and calling the 2010 World Cup in Rosario, Argentina.

It was the second major milestone reached by an umpire at this year’s Electric Ireland FIH Champions Challenge 1. Earlier in the week, South African Marelize De Klerk umpired her 200th game.
