It was third time lucky for South Africa as their third penalty corner of the competition earned them the bronze medal in the Champions Challenge 1 match against Spain. As Player of the Match and goal scorer Dirkie Chamberlain said: "We really left it all on the pitch there."

In earlier games South Africa had missed two penalty corners, but with just three minutes left on the clock it was the cool head of Chamberlain that stepped up and made sure of the result.

A tense but high-paced first half ended 0-0, but both teams had chances to score during a frenetic 35 minutes. This was not a match that was noteworthy for the quality of play – there were too many errors for that, but it was a game that had the crowd believing that all players would leave every ounce of energy on the pitch.

Spain's goalkeeper, Maria Lopez de Eguilaz Zubiria was called into action when she made a double save from attempts by Kelly Madsen, while at the other end of the pitch Anelle van Deventer smothered a dangerous attack by the Red Sticks that seemed destined to break the deadlock.

The second half was end-to-end and pure entertainment, with both teams having the chance to score. Seconds after she scored, Chamberlain almost scored a second. This is South Africa's highest finish since they came second in 2009. For Spain a fourth place finish equals their performances in 2011 and 2009.
