The USA made a strong start to this game, scoring three goals in the first half, and although Spain scored in the second half, the Red Sticks never really looked as if they were going to trouble the strong, well-organised USA defence. The USA opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Katie O'Donnell got a slight touch on a shot from Caroline Nichols. This was O'Donnell's fourth goal of the tournament and leaves her as top goal-scorer with one game to play. She was also voted Player of the Match after an energetic performance.

The second USA goal came courtesy of Kathleen Sharkey (12') who ran onto a hard pass as it flew across the Spain goalmouth. At this point the USA were totally dominating the game and they began to play with some flair and freedom, spraying the ball liberally across the pitch. The third goal was an aerial shot from Jill Witmer (33'), which looped over goalkeeper Maria Lopez de Eguilaz Zubiria's head.

In the second half Spain looked to cope with the speed and athleticism of the USA team a little better and set up some attacks of their own. Lauren Crandall in the heart of the USA defence played her usual composed game, and after the match ended she said that keeping strong at the back so the forwards could run at the opposition had been at the core of the USA game plan.

The consolation goal for Spain came from Lola Riera (56') a hard penalty corner, which flew past Jackie Kintzer into the USA goal. The result means that Spain will play off for bronze against South Africa, while the USA face Ireland in the final. The winner will qualify for the 2016 Champions Trophy.
