Pitch side ponderings with New Zealand’s Simon Child

May 4, 2014
Let's speak to the Black Sticks' top scorer

Here is our daily 'pitch side ponderings' with New Zealand’s Simon Child. His Black Sticks won 6-3 against France to finish fifth at the Pahang Hockey Champions Challenge 1 in Kuantan.

New Zealand came here to win the tournament, now you finished fifth. What are your thoughts on this tournament?
This is disappointing. We were the highest ranked team and we had high expectations of ourselves. We have learnt a lot in this tournament and there are enough positive things to take to the World Cup.

What do you want to achieve at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup in The Hague?
We have the goal of reaching the top six. We had a disappointing campaign last year but under this new management with Colin Batch we are playing really well, we are growing as a team and we are developing really well.

What is special about the Black Sticks?
All the guys get along really well. We are best mates and work hard for each other. We have the X-Factors, we can upset any other team on our day. I think we are a dangerous side.
