Italy defeated France 4-0 to secure their first win in women’s Pool A at the FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Finals in Antwerp, Belgium. The result puts the Italians onto four points, enough to guarantee their place in the cross-over quarter-finals.

Italy made the breakthrough towards the end of the first quarter from a penalty corner as Agata Wybieralska’s shot into the bottom right hand of the goal put them 1-0 ahead.

They doubled their lead in the second quarter when Marcela Casale scored the goal of the game.

The Italy number 32 drove into the circle and unleashed a powerful reverse shot into the top right of the goal, giving Italy a 2-0 lead.

By the end of the second quarter, Italy were 3-0 up after Giuliana Ruggieri got on the end of captain Chiara Tiddi’s pass to deflect the ball into the net.

Italy’s Agata Wybieralska got her second goal of the game with a powerful strike from a penalty corner which proved to be the last goal of the game as Italy won 4-0.

Following their win, Italy captain Chiara Tiddi said: “We felt good today. We had to win that game so we are happy with the result. Now we have to think about the game tomorrow because we know it will be an another important game against Japan, but we are feeling positive.”

Meanwhile, losing France captain said: “I think we were tired today. We felt a lot of pressure as well as we knew it was one of the only games we could have done something. But Italy were better physically – they were better prepared. It was hard to follow the game, the players – it was too quick for us. We had fun during the first two games but today was a bit more disappointing because we wanted to win.”
