BEL V FRA ( QF 4 ) Hockey World League Semi-Final Antwerp 2015

Match Review BEL - FRA 5-4
A blistering tempo and athletic heroics were the signature characteristics of this quarter final encounter between two European rivals, fourth-ranked Belgium and 18th-ranked France.
Despite moments of Gallic magic, it was the experience and consistency of the Belgium team that paid out in the end, as they ran out 5-4 winners. The entertaining match did not reflect the 14 place difference between the teams.
The first half seemed to indicate a runaway victory for the Red Lions, as first Florent van Aubel and then a fabulous shoulder-high deflection by Sebastien Dockier gave Belgium a 2-0 lead with just a few minutes of the half remaining.
The French response was sparked by a family affair as Tom Genestet saved a ferocious shot off the line and the rebound eventually found its way to his brother Martin Genestet who slammed it past Vincent Vanasch into the Belgium goal.
In reply, Belgium's immediate counter-attack – led by Loick Luypaert – forced a penalty corner, but Martin Zylbermann was equal to the challenge. Again a quick counter saw a diving Jean-Laurent Kieffer get his stick on the end of a French cross to send the teams into half-time all equal at 2-2.
Belgium took the game by the scruff of the neck in the early part of the second half, and Emmanuel Stockbroekx sent the host team back into the lead with a fine solo effort and then John-John Dohmen made it 4-2, a crafty poacher's goal at the far post following a penalty corner.
Again, a French revival threatened to rock the Red Lions as Aristide Coisne brought the score back to 4-3 with a superbly taken shot from the right-hand side of the circle.
Tom Boon re-established a two-goal cushion as he wriggled and weaved his way through the French defence before slotting the ball under Zylbermann. A video referral ruled the goal legitimate.
Still France were not out of it. Martin Genestet scored his second after sloppy defence by the Belgiums allowed the ball to bounce invitingly for the Frenchman. He snapped up the chance and the last five minutes were fraught with tension, as France sought the equaliser and Belgium's defence showed some signs of cracking under the pressure.
A final penalty corner to France had the large Belgium contingent's hearts in their mouths, but Victor Charlet's rasping shot went wide and Belgium left the field 5-4 winners, with a semi-final date with India to look forward to on Friday.
Martin Genestet, who scored two goals for France, including one with help from both his brothers, said: "Today I am thinking about the disappointment of the team, not my two goals. Now I will help keep the younger players focused for our next game against Malaysia. But we must take heart, we played very well today."
Captain of Belgium and one of the goal scorers, John-John Dohmen said: "We are so excited to have won in front of our home crowd. But they (France) made it difficult for us. They came back again and again. It was tough mentally."
