Big boost for FHF ahead of World League Round 2 in India

THE Fiji Hockey Federation received a boost as they prepare to send the national men's and women's side to Round 2 of the FIH (International Hockey Federation) World League in India.

Consort Shipping Line Ltd yesterday gave FHF a cheque for $10,000 to the men's team and one key member of the team.

National men's coach Hector Smith is employed as the fleet superintendent at the shipping company and the sponsorship will cover his $3200 that is required to travel to India for the event.

Founder and director of Consort Shipping Leo Smith said he was happy to contribute towards the success of Fiji hockey.

"For a minor sport to get support, they must prove themselves and our national hockey side did just that by qualifying for Round 2 of the World League," he said.

"I hope in the future this sport gets more exposure and the recognition it deserves."

Men's team manager Sainimili Smith thanked Leo for his assistance and said the gesture was highly appreciated. FHF president Dr Robin Mitchell said the sponsorship was a big boost for the side as they prepared to depart on February 14. "It's been a long hard road for team and gestures like these really warm out hearts," he said.

The national side, ranked 71 in the world, is pooled with hosts India (11th), China (18th), Ireland (15th), Bangladesh (40th) and Azerbaijan (38th).

The tournament will be played in New Delhi from February 18 to 24.
