SIN V CAM ( Pool ) 2016 Women Hockey World League Round 1 - Singapore (SIN)

Report from Singapore Hockey Federation
Singapore smashes Cambodia to keep qualification hopes alive
A one-sided match between Singapore and Cambodia on 14 April (Thursday) ensured that the host nation would be in with a fighting chance to qualify within the top two in the Hockey World League Round 1 Women’s Pool.
The host nation was clearly the most dominant team in the match, with a lion’s share of possession and over twenty penalty corners. Cambodia, on the other hand, sat back for most of the game and barely troubled Singapore custodian Lam Xin Ni.
Singapore got off to a bright start with a penalty corner goal from by Ong Yan Ting after converting Eunice Teng’s powerful sweep. They found of the net again from a penalty corner in the 12th minute after Tiffany Ong was able to shoot straight past the keeper from an assist by Ong Yan Ting.
Laura Tan would get onto the scoresheet in the 24th minute in a penalty corner move that she started and finished, before Tiffany Ong popped up once again to make it 4-0 to Singapore in the 26th minute.
Chua Xinni was able to directly score from a penalty corner in the 29th minute to make it 5-0 to Singapore.
There were some glaring misses by Singapore in the first half. Tan Wan Ting failed to score after long assist into D by Laura Tan in the 21st minute, while Syasya Rifqah Sanip was not able to bury the ball past Cambodian keeper Keo Sreytouch.
Singapore resumed normal service in the second half with a goal by Tiffany Ong in the 38th minute of the match as she scrambled the ball home in the Cambodian D. Eunice Teng would make it 7-0 just seconds later with a reverse shot just inside the D.
Things would really unravel for the Cambodians in the space of ten minutes in the second half, starting with Captain Laura Tan’s goal from just outside the D in the 49th minute.
Tam Wan Ting found herself on the scoresheet with a powerful shot from a penalty corner in the 51st minute, before completing a hat-trick for herself in the 53rd minute after Cambodia’s keeper and defence were unable to clear the ball at close range.
Wan Ting scored her fourth goal in the 54th minute from close range after Cambodia’s defence failed to pick up her run, before teammate Nadia Ibrahim took over the duty of scoring for Singapore in the 55th and 59th minutes to take the score to 13-0.
It was only a matter of time that Singapore would equal Kazakhstan’s and Thailand’s winning margin against Cambodia earlier in the tournament, and they would achieve that in the 68th minute after substitute Ivy Chan scored.
Despite yet another heavy drubbing, the relatively young Cambodian team can pride themselves in never having stopped trying. Keeper Sreytouch was a case in point, making two good saves in the 49th and 50th minutes to deny Singapore.
Cambodian captain Theab Sina also showed real leadership on the pitch, constantly trying to get the ball back from her opponents and looking to break past a crowded Singapore midfield whenever she could.
Nevertheless, Singapore are the ones who take all the glory in this match, and they will have to put in an equally strong performance against Brunei on 15 April (Friday) to strengthen their chances of making it through to the next round.
