THA V SIN ( Pool ) 2016 Women Hockey World League Round 1 - Singapore (SIN)

Report from Singapore Hockey Federation
Thailand douses Singapore's fire with hard-fought 2-0 win
On a day where their compatriots back home celebrated the first day of Songkran, Thailand doused Singapore's attacking fire by winning 2-0 in a crucial Round 1 Women's Pool match on Wednesday (9 April) night.
Singapore relied on their defensive back four to build on their attack in the Thai half and went close with a penalty corner in the 5th minute. However, Singapore's attackers failed to convert Eunice Teng's sweep and the ball was cleared by the Thais.
Thailand also managed earned a penalty corner early in the first-half but failed to convert. Mercurial captain Tikhaporn Sakunpithak also had a great chance to shoot at goal after picking up a long pass from her defence but failed to convert past Singapore's Lam Xin Ni.
Thailand would get their first goal in the 15th minute after Singapore failed to clear the ball in the D, allowing captain Tikhamporn to fire past a poorly guarded net.
They would get another penalty corner in the 23rd minute but Supansa Samanso failed to convert from the sweep, allowing Singapore to get some respite from the Thai's swift attacking play.
Both sides remained evenly matched up till the break, and Singapore also had their fair share of attacking chances but failed to find their finishing touch.
The hosts were unable to string together any decent chances after the break as Thailand - feeling confident about their ability to score more and not to concede - switched to a flat back three and committed more players to attack.
Their strategy paid off in the 43rd minute when Kanyanut Nakpolkrung was able to score after Thanaporn Tongkham made a blistering run into the D to assist her.
A defensive mistake by Singapore's back four in the 47th minute allowed Tongkham to once again get into the D to set up Kornkanong Sanpoung, but the latter wasted her chance to bury the ball past Xin Ni.
It would remain 2-0 from that point forward, as the Thais would then struggle to find the net in the 53rd minute despite camping within the Singapore circle in an attempt to find their third goal.
Singapore's best attacking chances after the break came from silly defensive errors by their opponents. A slip by Tongkham allowed Singapore to get forward, but the host nation's woeful passing meant in the D meant that Thailand were able to get off the hook.
Singapore kept trying to go forward in the second half and their last real chance came in the 63rd minute. However, Singapore's attackers once again fluffed the opportunity to score as they allowed Thailand to regain possession of the ball.
Thailand remains in contention to qualify to the next round with this 2-0 win against Singapore, and they will take a much-needed rest tomorrow to prepare for their crucial match against Kazakhstan on Friday (15 April).
Singapore can take heart that they fought tooth and nail for the 70 minutes against a highly ranked opponent and did not concede many goals. That being said, however, much more work will be needed on their finishing.
