SRI V SIN ( Pool B ) 2016 Men Hockey World League Round 1 - Singapore (SIN)

Report from Singapore Hockey Federation
Inspirational Mahara Damith Leads Sri Lanka to Glory
Mahara Damith of Sri Lanka produced a performance for the ages as he inspired the underdogs to a shocking 2-1 victory over the host nation at Sengkang Hockey Stadium on Tuesday night.
The initial stage of the game between Singapore and Sri-Lanka was fast-paced and extremely intense with both sides trading punches akin two well-matched boxers.
The host nation took the initiative to go ahead in the 10th minute as Adam Amir Aniq had the presence of mind to nudge home the rebound after a penalty corner shot was deflected away from goal.
A couple of minutes later, Singapore came close to scoring the second goal if not for a spectacular goal-line clearance by Sri Lanka’s Mahara Damith.
Sri Lanka began to retaliate but Singapore’s A Suresh produced another brilliant individual performance to keep Sri Lanka scoreless at halftime.
Two phenomenal saves within two minutes from Suresh kept Singapore’s slender lead intact. The first save came in the 20th minute when Suresh pulled off a spectacular reaction save to deny Sri Lanka. The second save was just as impressive as he managed to block a shot from point-blank range.
Sri Lanka had one more chance to equalize before half time as a well-worked short corner routine gifted Hasim Muhamad a glorious opportunity at the near post to level the score but his low drive towards far post was just wide of the post.
The second half began with similar intensity as the Sri Lankans were desperately searching for the elusive game-tying goal.
Suresh came to Singapore’s rescue once again when he stretched to deny a curling shot that was destined for the top corner of the goal in the 39th minute. However Singapore goalkeeper was helpless in the ensuing penalty corner as Mahara Damith smashed the ball into the corner, giving the Singapore custodian no chance at all.
Singapore were unfortunate not to have reclaimed the lead shortly after as Zainal Hazman’s effort from a penalty corner flashed narrowly wide.
Having stopped Singapore from scoring the second goal in the first half, Mahara Damith proved to be the difference between both sides again in the 56th minute as he made stupendous run down the right flank, weaving past several defenders before sending in a perfect cross for Abeetha Fernando to fire Sri Lanka ahead.
The score may have been 2-1 but Sri Lanka were definitely superior of the two sides as they had majority of the possession and created more chances. Although Singapore had their fair share of chances to equalize, they were constantly bogged down by inconsistency, players looked clueless at times and the passes lacked sharpness.
